The 7 Day Scotland Trip of Our Life

A few weeks ago my friend and I set off to travel Scotland. We really didn't plan a lot, all we did was to book our flight and reserve the hostel for the first night. After that we would go from there.

On a Monday we flew from Germany to Edinburgh, Scotland. When we arrived we had the typical Scottish rain weather. We took a bus from the airport to the city and quickly checked in to our hostel.

Then we decided on how we were going to travel. We really didn't have any plans all we knew was that we wanted to go up the west coast of Scotland and maybe stay on an island there and then to come back down to Edinburgh and travel parts of the east coast.

That was our plan. That night we met some people, and one of them offered us the chance to drive up to the west coast with them by car. So we agreed and left to travel to Isle of Skye on Wednesday morning.

Eventually after driving for a while, probably around 4-5 hours, we ended up on the Isle of Skye. We found a hostel in Broadford and stayed there for the night.

The next day we drove by car through the rest on Isle of Skye (it's really worth seeing). On the evening the people who had rented the car with us drove on and we stayed another night at Isle of Skye.

The next morning we got up early and took the bus to Inverness which is somewhat on the east coast but in a rather central place. From there we moved on to Pitlochry which is a small town between Inverness and Perth.

After visiting some things there we took the bus back to Edinburgh where we just stayed for the night because our flight was going to leave early in the morning.

Tips for Getting Cheap Flights to Scotland

There are lots of people traveling to Scotland each year. Most of them get there by plane. This is now more common then ever since the prices for plane tickets have dropped sharply.

The one question people always ask themselves is how you end up getting cheap flight tickets. So I hope to answer this question in this article

Be Flexible

To be able to get cheap flight fares you need to be flexible with your flight schedule. Generally the more flexible you are the higher the chances of you getting a cheaper flight.
So be prepared to have to act spontaneous.

Use the Right Booking Engine

Nowadays there are lots of online booking engines available that will pick the cheapest flight to Scotland for you. Visit these websites and try to find the right flight for you.
Usually the websites also allow you to search flights +/- 3 days from the day you picked for your flight. Enable this feature it will help you to find cheaper flights.

Create a List of Different Airports

In order to be able to identify the cheapest flight to Scotland you should make a list of all the different airports that are around your city and to which you can easily get to. Then enter the different airports in the booking engine and see what they come up with.

I hope this helps you for planning your trip to Scotland.

3 Tips for Traveling Scotland

Scotland is a great place to visit. There are so many people drawn there each year. One of the reasons is probably because of the great landscape.

No matter why you want to go to Scotland there are a few things that you should think about going there.

Traveling Off Season

My friend and I went to Scotland at the end of March till the beginning of April. It was a good time to travel Scotland since there aren't too many tourists around.
If you don't care about your money then go ahead and travel in the summer. That's when traveling Scotland is the most expensive.
Keep in mind that whenever you travel off season in a country it's much less crowded and you can focus more on the things you want to see.

Be Prepared for the Weather

The weather in Scotland is unpredictable. When we first arrived in Scotland it was raining all day, the typical Scottish weather. But it's strange how it changes so quickly. You can basically through all different seasons within a single day.
On our trip we went to see a beach nearby. On our way from the parking lot to the beach the weather was nice with the sun shining. Half an hour later we were on our way back to the car and that's when it started raining. So remember the weather can change extremely quickly.

Using Buses

At the beginning of our trip we drove to some places by car. But afterwards we moved through the country by bus.
I personally haven't made any bad experience with using buses in Scotland at all. They were usually on time and arrived when they were supposed to. But what you have to keep in mind is that booking buses a few days before can save you lots of money.
On the first few days we wanted to go to Glasgow by bus to rent a car there. So we went to the bus station and bought our tickets. Then we lined up in the queue to get in the bus. The guy in front of us realized that we had just bought the tickets and turned to us and asked "How much did you guys pay for the ticket?" We told him that we payed 6-7 pounds and that's when he started smiling. He then showed us his receipt: he had payed one pound.
Therefore always buy the bus tickets two days earlier to get the cheap prices.
